قَتليmy slaying بِناظِرِby the pupil of طَرفِهِhis eye الوَسنانِdrowsy
وَبِعَامِلٍand by a spear-shaft منfrom قَدِّهِhis stature وَسِنَانِand a spearhead
My slaying by the gaze of his drowsy eye,
With his alluring glance he has slain me
And by his stature's spear-shaft and spearhead,
And with his shapely neck and teeth.
أَحلىsweeter إِلىto قَلبيmy heart وَقَدand already عزَّhas become scarce العَزاsolace
منthan ذِلَّتيmy abasement ومَرارةٍand the bitterness of الهِجرانِseparation
Is sweeter to my heart, though solace is hard to find,
Sweeter to my heart, though separation's bitterness is great,
Than my abasement and the bitterness of separation.
Than my humiliation and the bitterness of estrangement.
ياO صاحِfriend إِنif رُمتَyou intend الُمرورَpassing بِرامةٍthrough Ramah
حَذِراًbeware عَلَيَّfor my sake مراتِعَthe grazing grounds of الغِزلانِthe gazelles
O friend, if you intend to pass through Ramah,
O companion, if you pass by the loved one's abode
Beware, for my sake, of the gazelles' grazing grounds.
Take care - lest you rouse the jealous spies.

There I fell in love and came to know the one
There my passion was born, there I learned
Who assailed me with rejection and long estrangement.
Through disdain and long estrangement to bear my torment.

Take me to my herd at the bend of al-Liwa,
Steal with me to my camp, by the winding path of devotion,
So perhaps the thirsty one's burning thirst may be quenched.
That the thirst of the love-crazed heart may be quenched.
وَعَليكَand you should cleave بالغُصُنِto the bough الرَّطيبِtender فَفَيهِfor in it ماwhat

And cleave to the tender bough, for it holds what
Take to the sweet-smelling branch, for in it is the fragrance
The meadow and the garden hold of blossoms.
Of the garden's blossoms and trees.

Were it not for his cheek-down's greening, I would not, in
Were it not for the greenness of his fresh youth,
My infatuation, be enthralled by the greenness of basil.
I would not wander distraught amid the basil bushes.

Nay, and were it not for the spear-shaft of his stature,
Never! Were it not for that shapely neck,
I would not, out of infatuation, have inclined toward boughs.
I would not be weary of clinging to the boughs.

What harm would it do him, honey-sweet and slender of figure,
The beauty of the slender and graceful one was not marred
If he adorned his beauty with kindness?
If he adorned his charm with kindness.

May I be made to forget him and denied the wine of his saliva,
I forget him and am deprived of the wine of his saliva
If anyone but him ever dwells in my eye's pupil.
If another settles in my intimacy.

The fault is the eyes' alone, for they
No sin except to the eyes, which made attractive
Have gained beauty from the flank of a ban-tree's bough.
What they borrowed from the charm of the supple bough.

They stole a full measure of beauty from him, and so suffered
They stole the provisions of beauty from him, so they gained
The severing of slumber—and that is the offender's rightful due.
Sleeplessness - and that is the right of the thief.
