فَراقبِ اللهَ في الهُجرانِ لي وخَفِ
My infatuation with you is no secret to you.
Something other than you preoccupies me though it's obscure
So be mindful of God when you shun me, and fear Him.
So watch over God during estrangement for me and be wary

Turn away from injustice, deal justly with souls, and do not
And turn away from injustice and turn in souls and do not
Wrong the love-crazed, enamored, wasting lover.
Drag the infatuated, weak soul into blame

O you who feather arrows from your eye's glance,
O you who glance arrows from your gaze
Nock them, for there is no target but my heart.
Aim upwards for my heart is no target

Glory to Him who gave you a waist that does not shorten
Glory to the One who gave you a waist other than concise
My torment, and a flank that will not bend toward me.
For me there is torment and kindness other than gentle

I complained for you to eulogize me and pity what
I suffer from my wasting passion and my infatuation.
My burning, agonizing passion and my endeavor brought me

Your cheek-down sends me back despairing of that—
Hopeless your aversion sends me back
Lām-shaped—together with the curve of your alif-like figure.
Not reprimanding nor the thousand-folded bend of your neck

Our loved ones in the districts of the two Ghoutas, may
Our loved ones in Al-Ghoutah's plains were watered
A downpour of my streaming tears water your dwellings.
By showers of my streaming tears

Before separation, I used to complain of your shunning—oh,
I used to complain before vowing of being spurned so alas
How I long for that shunning today, and how I grieve!
My fervor for being spurned daily oh what a pity

Your open space, my field, caravans pass by
From among the heavy, streaming, low-hanging night-clouds.
Of heavily laden camels, kneepads and howdahs

Pleasure grounds—how many a coquettish young gazelle they hold,
With servants, how many gentle, smiling, sweet
Sweet in manners, with honeyed dusky lips, delicate,
Of traits, refined of gestures, gentle souls

Veiled by unfounded reproach and coyness, gentle
Veiled in coquetry and flirtation, soft
In speech, dark-eyed, and haughty by nature.
Of speech, prettiest, of natural charm
