    May my heart find healing and my hearing take delight

    In the sweetness of fragrant words from you.

    منزَّهةَ الألحاظِ من غير أدمُعٍ

    And may the gardens of your beauty bring relief to my eyes,

    A pleasure-ground for the gaze, without tears;

    And from the boughs of your bān-tree figures may there look forth

    Faces—full moons rising from the darkness of night.

    Yet wherever your dwellings may stand,

    You are guests in my heart, between my ribs.

    ولا فكرةٌ وإلاَّ وأنتُم بها معي

    And no glance but you are present in it,

    And no thought but you are there with me;

    And no breath rises except because of you,

    And no eye but looks eagerly toward you.

    Were it not for you, I would not have said to the flashing lightning:

    “Perhaps there is news of neighbors of mine at Laʿlaʿ!”

    Nor would I have met the breeze’s first gust, questioning it,

    With a grieving one’s sigh and a sufferer’s moan.

    And the sum of my state is that, in my love for you, I am

    A lover, yearning, love-stricken, no pretender.
