سَقَىmay water اللهُGod لاnot أَكنافَthe environs of نَجدٍNajd ولاnor حُزوىḤuzwā
ولاnor سَفحَthe foot of نَعمانٍNaʿmān ولاَnor عَلَميthe two peaks of رَضوىRaḍwā
May God water neither Najd’s outlying regions nor Ḥuzwā,
May God water—not Najd’s environs nor Ḥuzwā,
nor the slope of Naʿmān, nor Radwā’s twin landmarks.
Nor Naʿmān’s foot, nor Raḍwā’s twin peaks;
وَحيَّاand may greet الحَياthe rain لاَnot حَيَّthe encampment of قومٍa people بِرامَةٍat Rāmah
وَسَقَّىand may water عِشارُheavily pregnant she-camels الُمزنِof the rain-clouds لاnot عَلَماًa landmark أَقوىthat became deserted
And may the life-giving rain greet no people’s camp at Rāmah,
And may rain greet—not a people’s encampment at Rāmah;
nor may the pregnant rainclouds water a landmark fallen desolate.
And may the rain-clouds’ pregnant she-camels water—not a landmark left deserted.

I yearn—but not for the ben-trees or the protected pasture;
I yearn, but not for the ben trees and the protected pasture;
I love—but neither Suʿād nor ʿUlwā.
And I love, but neither Suʿād nor ʿAlwā.
يُؤَرَّقُنيkeeps me sleepless شَوقيmy longing إِلىfor غَيرِother than ضارجٍḌārij

A longing for somewhere other than Ḍārij keeps me awake,
My longing for somewhere other than Ḍārij keeps me sleepless;
and I pine, praying for rain beyond the utmost reach of distance.
And I pine, and ask the rain-stars for rain on other than far-off abodes.
سَلامٌpeace علىupon غيرِother than العَقيقِal-ʿAqīq وأهلهِand its people
معالمِthe landmarks of سُكَّانٍdwellers وغيرِand other than الذيwhat أهوىَI love
A greeting—not to al-ʿAqīq and its people,
Peace upon other than al-ʿAqīq and its people—
nor to the traces of dwellers, nor to the one I love;
The dwellers’ landmarks—and other than what I love;
ولكنbut علىupon القصرينِthe two palaces والأرُبعِand the dwellings التيwhere

but to the Two Palaces and the quarters where
But upon the two palaces and the dwellings where
the tales of my grief for him who dwelt there are told.
Tales of my sorrows for those who dwelt there are told.

To you, beloved of my heart, from me a greeting,
To you, beloved of my heart, a greeting from me
ecstatic—a greeting whose memory makes his sides sway.
That, when recalled, sets his sides swaying in rapture.
لَقدindeed أسرَتنيhas held me captive لَوعةٌburning grief بَعدَafter جامعٍone who gathers
شتاتَthe scattered parts of العلىnobility فيin السِّرِّsecrecy منهof him وفيand in النَّجوىwhispered confidences
Indeed, anguish has captured me since losing one who gathered
Truly, burning grief has held me captive in the absence of one who gathered
the scattered excellences found in him, in private and in intimate converse.
The scattered strands of nobility, in his secrets and his whispered confidences.
