May al-Uthayl in al-Aqiq never be passed over

By a rain cloud that turns the earth into a torrent.

And may God water a dwelling at al-Thaniyya

That brought us and Layla together in joy.

And may a breeze drift over it at dawn,

Scented with Mandali aloeswood, trailing its hem through the meadows.

Fragrant, it keeps driving at a gallop, in the race—

—course of those ruins, the rain clouds' horses.

My friend, pause a moment and weep on my behalf

For those ban trees, the protected pasture, and the little palms.

Abodes of youth: long ago we knew

There upon their hills dear folk of our own,

    And a fair-featured one, gazelle-like in gaze

And in turning, and like a bough in bending and swaying.

He makes night into day with his brow,

And turns day back into night with his hair.

Stingy with his dream-image: no favor from him has been hoped for

By a lovesick soul begging for union.

I have a body that, compared with his waist and my sickness,

Is frailer in strength and weaker in power.
