    Love decrees that lovers submit

By force, and eyes take their toll on them.

There is no hope, while union is being sundered,

Of ever recovering from the sickness of one enslaved by love.

The lover's ordeal is that, after separation,

He gulps down sorrows, or yearns.

Had lovers any good fortune in love,

No parting would ever have been created.

I swear by days that passed in our union,

Whose fringes were delicate with joy:

I would not weep at parting from my loved ones,

If it held a hug and an embrace.

O you who decree that the tears of my eye must not

Cease, but must go on being shed:

Do not hasten to take my soul; be gentle,

For these words are addressed to you.

At your demand for my blood, I feel,

By your lives, neither anguish nor fear.

How many a lover like me is slain by brows—

They are the bows, and their arrows are the eyes.
