Is there, in the breeze from al-Hajir as it passes by night,

news whose fragrance I take for richly scented musk?

Or does the little flickering lightning-flash bear a message

that has come to retell to us the tale just as it unfolded?

The time has come, O people of al-Aqiq, for one who drinks

burning heartache from the waters of your love to depart.

By God, since you left, my soul has found no

solace, and slumber never visits my eye.

I yearn when an east wind blows from your land,

and I pine if I behold a radiant dawn.

And the breeze keeps dictating to me the tale of you,

as though it had given me an intoxicating draught of longing.

And so the reproacher spurred me on, for he

revived my heart by mentioning you, without knowing it.

I love you until death, and love for you

is solace for the decayed remains of my bones beneath the soil.
