If I am not to see union with you return,

Then send your phantom to visit me in sleep.

O you whose coldness kindles sorrow's fire in

My liver—you spend no night in torment over my anguish.

Why does your eyes' languid gaze withhold from

My thirsty heart that cool saliva?

And its keen, white swords of Indian steel

Have left me shunning the sin of your mouth.

    The place to kiss on you is nothing but a qibla;

Oh, the triumph of whoever spends the evening prostrate toward it!

Glory be to Him who gave you a tranquil gaze,

Clothing hearts in grief, and hair cascading down.

A glance and hair—in this and that you see nothing

But lions of battle and black serpents.

If you are pleased, O tormentor of my soul,

With my sleeplessness, then may you never be granted an eye that sleeps.
