إِنif جزتُI passed بالجَرعاءِat al-Jarʿāʾ قَصراًa palace
أَقوَىlay deserted منَof الأَحبابِthe loved ones دَهراfor a long time
If ever I passed a palace at al-Jarʿāʾ,
If I am rewarded with a palace
deserted by loved ones for an age,
Stronger than loved ones over time
فَلكمthen how often بَكيتُI wept لِمَعهدٍfor a familiar haunt
أضحىbecame لطولِbecause of the length of العَهدِthe time elapsed قفراdesolate
then how often I wept for a familiar haunt
Then how I cried for a homeland
grown desolate with the long passage of time!
Which became desolate from a long absence
أكرمِhow splendid! بأَيَّامٍwere the days مَضتpassed
فيهِin it بِوصلِthrough union with الغِيدthe graceful beauties غرَّاradiant
How splendid were the days that passed
Honor me with passed days
there, radiant with union with graceful beauties!
When the rain wet the dry land
أيَّامَdays when تَحميguarded البِيضُthe white swords بِيfair beauties (word begins here)
ضاًfair beauties (word ends here) غيرَةًout of jealousy والسُّمرُand the brown spears سُمراbrown-skinned beauties
Days when white swords guarded fair
Days when the eggs shield me
beauties jealously, and brown spears brown beauties;
With jealousy, and the night remains intoxicated
وَتهُزُّand sway أغصانَthe boughs of الأراthe arak trees (word begins here)
كِarak trees (word ends here) معاطِفُthe curves of الأَطنابِthe tent-ropes سُكراin drunkenness
and the boughs of the arak
And the branches of trees sway
trees were swayed by the tent-ropes’ curves in drunkenness.
Like the skirts of robes in rapture
وَترىand you see الثُّغورَthe mouths كأَنَّماas though
نُظمتwere strung علىupon الياقوتِthe rubies دُرَّاas pearls
And you would see the mouths as though
And you see the frontiers as if
they were pearls strung upon rubies.
Strung with pearls one next to the other
ياO قصرُpalace أَينَwhere أَحبتَّيmy loved ones
كانواthey were لَناfor us عوناa support وذخراand a treasure
O palace, where are my loved ones?
Oh palace where are my loved ones
They were our support and treasure.
Who were a helper and treasure to us
كناwe used to نرىwe see منfrom كلِّevery منperson
فيin وَجههhis face شَمساًa sun وبَدراand a full moon
We used to see in each one’s
We saw in each one’s face
face a sun and a full moon.
A sun and a full moon
وكأَنَّهمand as though they ماnot أَطَلعواthey brought forth
منfrom تَحتِbeneath لَيلٍthe night of الفَرعِthe hair فَجراa dawn
And it is as though they had never brought forth
As if they had not risen
a dawn from beneath the night of their hair.
From beneath a night of branches in dawn
