تُرىI wonder هلwhether درَىknew بهُof him مُغرمٌan enamored lover صبُّlovesick
فأغراهُso tempted him بالتَّعذيبِinto tormenting ليme ذلكَthat الحُبُّlove
I wonder: did he know that an ardent lover was enamored of him,
Does an ardent lover know the torment of love?
and that love then tempted him to torment me?
It allures him into anguish, such is love's way.
هوىًa passion كادَnearly أنto يُوديbe fatal بعينيto my eye ومُهجتيand my life's blood
فلاso neither ماءُwater (tears) ذيthis one's يرقاceases ولاnor نارُfire ذيthis one's تخبوdies down
A passion that nearly cost me my eye and my life's blood:
My passion almost destroyed my eyes and brain.
so the one's tears never cease, nor does the other's fire die down.
No tears can moisten them, no fire can warm them.
منَamong السُّمرِthe dark-complexioned ماnot سُمرُthe brown ones القناthe spear-shafts كقَوامهِlike his stature
إذاwhen ماever (emphatic) ثنَىbent أعطافَهhis sides التيهُhaughtiness والعُجبُand vanity
He is dark-complexioned; brown spear-shafts cannot match his stature
He sways like a drunkard when he walks proudly,
when pride and vanity make his sides sway.
Lost in himself and his airs when he wanders.
تكفَّلَundertook to ensure تَسهيديmy sleeplessness لهfor him وتولُّهيand my infatuation
لهُwith him النَّاظرُthe eye الفتَّانbewitching والمبَسمُand the smiling mouth العَذبُsweet
My sleeplessness for him and my infatuation are assured
I care for him and long for him desperately,
by his bewitching eye and sweet smiling mouth.
His glances enchant me, his smile is so sweet.
فبينَso between الضنَّاwasting sickness والجسمِand the body سِلمٌpeace بهجرهِthrough his abandonment
وبينَand between الكَرىslumber والجَفنِand the eyelid قدalready قامتِhas arisen الحربُwar
So wasting sickness and my body are at peace through his abandonment,
Between my chest and body his abandonment stands,
while war has broken out between slumber and my eyelid.
Between my eyelids and eyes, war rages on.
لهhe has سيفٌa sword لحظِof glances مُرهفٌkeen-edged أناI ضامنٌa guarantor
لِمضربهِfor its stroke أنthat لاnot يُقلَّbe raised لهُagainst it عَضبُa sharp sword
He has a keen-edged sword of glances; I vouch
His glance is a naked sword, I guarantee
for its stroke: no sharp blade will be raised against it.
It will not lack in wrath when it strikes a blow.
حبيبيmy beloved تُرىI wonder هلwhether ليfor me بعَطفِكَthrough your tenderness ساعةًan hour
يضمُّgathers حواشيناour sides بهاduring it مَنزلٌa dwelling رَحبُspacious
My beloved, I wonder: may your tenderness grant me an hour
My love, will you spare me your affection an hour
when a spacious dwelling gathers us side by side?
To fill our homes with joy and laughter?
وهلand whether ليfor me إلىto الشَّكوىcomplaint سبيلٌa way فأَشتكيso I may complain
فلاfor neither الرُّسلُthe messengers تَشفينيheal me إليكَto you ولاnor الكُتبُthe letters
And is there a way for me to voice my grief, so I may complain?
Can I find a way to complain and moan my fill,
For neither messengers to you nor letters can heal me.
When neither messengers nor books console my pain?
لجهليthrough my ignorance أظنُّI think القربَnearness ليfor me منكَto you نافعاًbeneficial
وسِيَّانِand equal فيin وجديmy longing لكَfor you البُعدُdistance والقُربُand nearness
In my ignorance, I think nearness to you would benefit me,
In my ignorance I hoped your nearness would help,
though distance and nearness are alike in my longing for you.
But your distance and closeness are equal in my fervor.
جَمالُbeauty حَياءٍof modesty زائدٍabundant وصِيانةٌand chastity
ويكفيكَand it suffices you أَنthat تحميكَprotect you أَجفانُكَyour eyelids الدُّربُseasoned
The beauty of abundant modesty, and chastity—
A shy beauty graces you, a virtuous modesty,
and your seasoned eyelids suffice to protect you.
Your downcast eyelashes guard you adequately.
ففيso in ذاthis وفيand in هَذاكَthat قلبيmy heart مُولَّهُbewildered with love
كئيبٌgrief-stricken وجفنيand my eyelid لاnot يجفُّdries لهits صبٌّan outpouring
So in this and in that my heart is bewildered with love,
For this and that, my heart is crazy for you,
grief-stricken; and my eyelid's stream never runs dry.
Gloomy, while my eyes rain tears ceaselessly.
تُمثلُevokes ليfor me أَعطافَthe contours قامَتكَof your figure القناthe spears
ويُذكرنيand reminds me ألحاظَthe glances مُقلتكَof your eye السِّربُthe gazelle herd
Spears conjure up the contours of your figure for me,
Your swaying shape is a vision before my eyes,
and the gazelle herd recalls the glances of your eye.
Your sidelong glances keep passing through my thoughts.
