    مَسعى وأيّامِ الحَطيمِ وَزمزمِ

    I swear by the pilgrims’ standing at Arafat, and the night of the

    Mas‘a, and the days of al-Hatim and Zamzam;

    بَيتِ العَتيقِ وَكُلِّ أَشعثَ مُحرمِ

    And by stoning at the Jamarat, and Tashriq at the

    Ancient House, and every disheveled pilgrim in ihram;

    And by the striving of the brethren of purity upon al-Safa,

    And by the blood shed upon al-Muhassab:

    Never shall I turn from my love for you; and with love for you

    My last remnant of life shall meet God—nay, my very bones.

    Even so, my heart, as regards your form, has never [become]

    empty; nor is my love for you forbidden.

    And when lightning’s smile stirs something still

    Within the heart, you are stirred by every smile.
