أَشتاقُكُمI long for you all كُلَّماwhenever ناحَتlamented مُطَوَّقَةٌa ring-necked dove
أَشتاقُكُم كُلَّما ناحَت مُطَوَّقَةٌ
وَمَيَّلَand bent البانَthe bān trees للنَّكباءِof the crosswind أَنفاسُbreaths
وَمَيَّلَ البانَ للنَّكباءِ أَنفاسُ
I long for you whenever a ring-necked dove laments,
Whenever a caged dove coos mournfully,
and breaths of the crosswind bend the bān trees.
And the flute inclines its melody to the unfortunate,
وأَذكُرُand I recall الشَّامَal-Sham منfrom فَرطِexcess أَسِفاًgrieving
وأَذكُرُ الشَّامَ من فَرطِ أَسِفاً
وَالقلبُand the heart فيهin it مِنَfrom التَّفريقِseparation وَسواسُanxious whispering
وَالقلبُ فيه مِنَ التَّفريقِ وَسواسُ
And I recall al-Sham, overwhelmed with grief,
I remember Damascus intensely out of regret,
and the heart harbors anxious whispers born of separation.
With a heart filled with the agony of separation.
