لَمdid not أَنسَI forget لَيلةَthe night زُرتُهاI visited her فيin غَفلةٍa moment of inattention
مِنon the part of كَاشحٍa spiteful foe وَمُراقبٍand a watcher وَحسُودِand an envier
I have not forgotten the night I visited her, unnoticed
By spiteful foe, watcher, or envier.
فَضَممتُthen I embraced مِنهاof her غُصنَa bough بَانٍbān (moringa) أَهَيفٍslender
مُتَرنِّحٍswaying منfrom بَانهِits bān-tree الَمقدودِwell-proportioned
Then I embraced in her a slender bough of bān,
Swaying from its shapely bān-tree.
وَلَثمتُand I kissed ثَغراًa mouth وَاحيايoh, my modesty! وَخَجلَتيand my shame!
إِنif قُلتُI said مِثلُlike اللُّؤلُؤِpearls الَمنضودِstrung together
And I kissed a mouth—oh, my modesty and shame,
If I should say it was like pearls strung together!
فَشَكرتُso I thanked صَمتَthe silence خلاخِلٍanklets وأَساورٍand bracelets
وَشكَوتُand I complained of نُطقَthe speech مَخانِقٍchokers وَعُقودِand necklaces
So I thanked the silence of anklets and bracelets,
And complained of the speech of chokers and necklaces.
