How long shall I keep recalling the tale of Su'di,

When Su'ad has broken the pledge in my absence?

And how often I yearn for lightning's gleam,

That passes over the hills in the land of Najd.

And how often I breathe in the winds as they blow,

And in them is the scent of wormwood and laurel.

I soothe my heart with hopes, in self-deception,

Though such solace is of no avail.

My two friends, gently halt awhile

Your young she-camel at Hind's ruined camp.

And give it a special greeting, then salute

The eyes of its gazelles, which lay lions low.

And if the radiance reveals to you both a gazelle,

The light of whose brow guides like the dawn,

Then pour out whatever occurs to you both, and say

To him, if he honors the claim of my pledge:

By the slenderness and suppleness of your form,

And by the coolness and hailstones in your mouth,

Shelter one distraught with love from your bitter abandonment,

    Whose throbbing limbs are aflame.

He is barred from the nectar of your saliva,

And burned for love of you by the fire of longing.
