Give greetings—may you be safe—to the neighbors of Jayrun,

O friend, from one whose heart is love-stricken and sorrowful.

And single out its congregational mosque on my behalf: how often

its precincts reunited us with loved ones in times past.

And stop at Khatun's mosque, for there

and at al-Maniʿ the heart has been humbled.

And you, O lightning, greet the two Nayrabs there,

and drench its Mazza in pouring rain [final word unclear].

And if you reach the beloved precincts late at night, greet there

a people who settled in Jaramana and Jisrin.

The ailing one is healed by the sight of it, and is gladdened

by scents that waft from the heart of Qalbin.

And pass through Beirut, where the water descends,

seeping among gardens of fragrant herbs.

where the full moons, upon the supple boughs, have come

to strut with gracefully swaying figures and softness.

Look out over al-Sharaf al-Aʿla when they appear,

those gazelles, among the spreading trees of al-Mayadin.

On a Saturday you see the delicate ones carrying

upon their shoulders the likenesses of serpents.

And greet its Sahm—that place is, to my

heart, an arrow; from it the shafts of longing strike me dead.

And can any water swell your tears like Yazid,

    or stir us like Thawra's water—can Sayhun's?

And rain down your tears at al-Maytur, and weep for

a time of play we spent in ʿArbin.

And, going early, ask the doves of that grove,

as they mourn sorrowfully upon the gardens' branches.

where the anemones lay down their cheeks in shyness,

and roses glory among stocks and wild roses.

And the fresh narcissus: its eye sockets have come

to mirror the languor of shy, wide-eyed maidens' eyes.

And the violets have perfumed breaths

that put the herald of India's and China's perfume to shame.

Abodes whose sweetness I have found nothing to replace—

no, not even if it were an unceasing reward.

And I would not sell the fragrance of that breeze there

for Egypt's kingdom, nor for Qarun's riches.

How lovely the time there in the days of spring

for us—and how sweet in the days of Tishrin!

It delights me in summer, when the heat is blazing,

and I do not dislike it in the months of Kanun.

Al-Maqs is not my home, nor are the Seven Faces there

a satisfying abode; nor does al-Taj concern me.

And I shall never regret it if I depart from the

Nilometer, with the Nile surging like Jayhun.

Nor do I think the sight of the pyramids can content me

in place of a pavilion on the hills of Jidya and Zabdin.

No—nor can its tree at the Two Palaces turn me away

from its mosque's courtyard for a day, or distract me.

Nor can visiting al-Qarafa compensate me

for Qasiyun, nor can talismans captivate me.

Nor do I find my outing in al-Luq fitting

    after Satra, Muqra, and al-Mayadin.

Nor have I exchanged Bab al-Barid for what

I see by night of black plumes of smoke.

This is my tale: the delay has not grown long, nor

has time changed, and I have someone to console me.

I shall drive the pale camels away from it, submissive,

to al-Sham; the smallest livelihood will suffice me.
