لا تمنعنَّ الطَّيفَ يطرُق مَضجَعي

لا تمنعنَّ الطَّيفَ يطرُق مَضجَعي

فَعسى أَرى مِنكَ الخيالَ الزَّائِرا

فَعسى أَرى مِنكَ الخيالَ الزَّائِرا

Do not keep the dream-phantom from visiting my bed at night,

Do not forbid the phantom to knock at my bed

For perhaps I shall see your image come to visit.

Perhaps I will see your visiting apparition

وَتَرى مُحبَّاً لو تَزيدُ عَذابهُ

وَتَرى مُحبَّاً لو تَزيدُ عَذابهُ

أَضعافَهُ ما كانَ إِلاَّ شاكِرا

أَضعافَهُ ما كانَ إِلاَّ شاكِرا

And you may see a lover who, were you to increase his torment

And you will see a lover, though you increase his torment

Many times over, would be nothing but grateful.

Manifold, he would still be thankful

لا غَروَ إِن أَضحيتَ عنِّي مُعرضاً

لا غَروَ إِن أَضحيتَ عنِّي مُعرضاً

تيهاً وقَد رُحتَ الغَزالَ النَّافِرا

تيهاً وقَد رُحتَ الغَزالَ النَّافِرا

No wonder if you have turned away from me

No wonder if you have turned away from me

In pride, for you have become the fleeing gazelle.

Lost, though you were a fleeing gazelle
