    By the polished Indian-steel sword of your eyes,

    the reproach of the faultfinding censurer has indeed shaken me.

    He nocks arrows against me from his embellished words,

    aimed straight, yet born of unsound judgment.

    Lost be the night-traveler who strayed in night's darkness,

    and thought he could find his way by anything but your face.

    He charges with a cheek as red as my tears

    shed over it, and hair as black as my fortune.

    For love's sake, will you not pity a lover,

    bound to wasting sickness—if he has not died, it is as though he has.

    إذا نهضَت قالَ الغرامُ لها اقعُدي

    Be gentle, for you have left nothing but a remnant of life;

    when it rises, passion tells it, 'Sit down.'

    I console myself with promises of tomorrow,

    and strangest of all is that I should live until tomorrow.

    فما النَّفعُ في مجموعِ شملٍ مبدَّدِ

    I see you, then lower my eyes in awe of your majesty;

    what use, then, is a reunion still torn apart?

    Your rosy cheek knew that you were victorious,

    so it spared you the lām-shaped, mail-like line of cheek-down.

    Enough for you that, since I knew you, my eyelids have rejected

    sleep, and my side has rejected my bed.

    You charge my gaze with watching al-Suhā in night's darkness,

    yet al-Suhā is far from pitying the sleepless.

    And you destroy my eyes with tears and weeping,

    and my heart's lifeblood with blazing grief.

    فَما العذرُ في تعذيبِ قلبِ المُوحِّدِ

    You torment my heart. I said, 'Your gaze is a polytheist;

    what excuse, then, for tormenting a monotheist's heart?'
