At the lower edge of the valley bend, by that sand dune,

Are oryx that have hunted nothing but hearts.

    سَقاهُ الله صَوبَ حياً سكوبِ

    And this side of al-ʿAlamayn’s bend is a tribe;

May God water it with a downpour of streaming rain.

For them, the eyes of the wide-eyed are deadly substitutes

For swords amid the dust of war.

The sidelong glances of each gazelle among them deny—

Each of wondrous form—any kindness to the stranger.

And how many an armored warrior, away from battlefields,

Lies slain by passion—and how many a sorrowful lover!

I implore you: stop with me, my friend; let us seek

A beloved in the tents of Banu Habib.

Even if stopping brings no benefit to one consumed by love,

Especially if he calls to one who will not answer,

You will find it free of a reproacher’s tongue

That grows long with reproach, and of a kinsman’s eye.

We have grown used to parting across great distances,

And long estrangement from one close at hand.

So we fear no estrangement from a woman who shuns men,

Nor hope for estrangement from an affectionate one.

God curse love! For there is no turning aside

My great, abundant share of it

By hopes. Who is there for my eyelid but my tears,

Amid them, and for my ribs but my flame?

When will the sick man attain healing,

If the sickness comes from the physician?
