    O gazelle whose

    movements are a snare for humankind,

    what have you done to a lover,

    heart-riven, with sickness plain to see,

    laden with cares, enslaved by love,

    wasting and distraught with love for you?

    He quivers with delight whenever

    you favor him one day with a greeting.

    And when you pass, he cries, “How

    splendid you are in this form!”

    My lord, how many arrows have your glances

    shot into the depths of my heart!

    ما ذاكَ لحظك بَل حسام

    Your figure is no figure, but a spear;

    your glance is no glance, but a sword.

    مِ فَلا أَقلّ من الكَلام

    So grant me—may I be your ransom—speech;

    for speech is the very least.

    شَملى وَشَملِكَ في اِلتِئام

    And keep the old covenant, when

    you and I were joined together;

    تَ قَريب عَهد بِالفطام

    in the days when you came to me, and you

    had only lately been weaned;

    تَسِب الفَضائِل بِاِهتِمام

    in the days when you came to me, acquiring

    virtues with devoted care;

    وَكمال حَظّي في اِنتِظام

    in the days when my good fortune was rising,

    and all my good fortune fell into place;

    ل وَثُغر دَهري في اِبتِسام

    in the days when I had your favor,

    and the mouth of my days was smiling;

    ف وَلا عِتاب وَلا اِحتِشام

    in the days when I feared no blame,

    no reproach and no reserve;

    م وَدونَ قَدرِكَ يا غُلام

    in the days when you were called “O boy”—

    though “O boy” was beneath your station;

    بَك لا قناع وَلا لِثام

    in the days when you walked proudly in your youth,

    with neither veil nor face-covering;

    بَة حلة البَدر التِمام

    and upon you, among the robes of majesty,

    lay the robe of the moon at its full;

    alas for that time

    and its serenity—if only it had lasted!

    Ah, if only wishes were granted,

    I would repeal the laws of passion,

    and say, “He is no sane man

    who goes mad with love for gazelles.”

    I would be content with no more of your company

    than a meeting once in every year.

    So, by your own worth, pity my burning anguish,

    my infatuation with you and my love-madness.

    And grant me union with you, if only

    through the image of your phantom in sleep.

    And be gentle with a wasted body,

    and an eye whose tears stream down.

    And grant these woes acceptance once again,

    for you come of a noble people.

    I am the one you know, so do not heed

    the base folk speaking against your lover.

    And grant him whatever falls short of the forbidden,

    for he covets nothing forbidden.

    By God, in one like the likes of me,

    there is no blame, my lord.

    Yet my steadfast endurance—

    through it I hope for a good end.
