Have you not seen how the tribe were divided

by relentless separation, that day in the desert of al-Ghumaym?

A destination that carried them far from ours, and stirred

longing in us—misfortunes do arouse it.

My eyes shed no tears until they moved away—

their household baggage and camel litters, at dawn.

And until I saw the tribe's camping grounds swept

by a passing wind from Yemen that lifted the dust.

Then one was happy, elated at your departure,

while another wept, sobbing beside the dwellings.

So if Hind is a paradise whose way is barred,

despair may turn a young man aside, and he turns away.

When Hind has settled in al-Ranqa to stay,

and the time has come for me to leave Damascus,

and I was given wormwood country in its place; and in place of

    sakhbar plants and reeds came the gullies of al-Matali;

and from Hawran—with al-Qunn between us and her—there stretched

hills and sandy hollows, blazing with heat,

there is no reunion unless the distance between us is closed by

lean young she-camels tugging their doubled reins,

and a sturdily built she-camel, past the age of growing her canines,

her belly bound by a girth strap and woven band.

Her legs are nimble at speed, as though they were

cedar pillars, with spaces between them.

When she descends onto hard ground, they bear the strain—

her foot-pads, some bleeding, others split.

And many a desert with dust-darkened horizons, its mirage flowing

over its hillocks before midmorning, surging in waves,

I crossed when the arta shrubs' shade clothed

squat, compact-bodied beasts grazing the wilderness.

By the life of al-Murri's daughter, I am not one

who cries out when misfortunes befall him.

And the mother of the two boys knows that I

am ever rising from drowsiness and going out to a guest.

And I indeed hold meat dear while raw, and indeed I

am among those who hold meat cheap when it is cooked.

When the lean nursing mother, at night, is overpowered

at her breast by a milk-hungry little one with two hair-tufts,

whenever guests seek someone who offers hospitality,

a she-camel that loses her winter young, calving too soon, feeds them for me.

A she-camel as big as a male, bearing at her shinbone, from the sword,

clotted blood I had not wiped away, and abrasions.

As though the hackberry-wood camel saddles, at every halt,

upon her in the desert's midst, were horse saddles.

    Whatever may dwindle, my generosity

and my face, mother of the boy, remain radiant through it.
