لَعَمري لَئِن كانَت سُهَيَّةُ أَوضَعَت

لَعَمري لَئِن كانَت سُهَيَّةُ أَوضَعَت

بِأَرطاةَ في رَكبِ الخِيانَةِ وَالغَدرِ

بِأَرطاةَ في رَكبِ الخِيانَةِ وَالغَدرِ

By my life, if Suhayya has hastened

By my life, though Suhayyah be branded

With Artah in the caravan of betrayal and treachery,

With infamy on the roll of treachery and betrayal,

فَما كانَ بِالطَرفِ العَتيقِ فَيُشتَرى

فَما كانَ بِالطَرفِ العَتيقِ فَيُشتَرى

لِفَحلَتِهِ وَلا الجَوادِ إِذا يَجري

لِفَحلَتِهِ وَلا الجَوادِ إِذا يَجري

Then he was no thoroughbred steed to be bought

Yet the noble Arab steed is not for sale

For his stud qualities, nor a fleet horse when he runs.

For its lineage, nor the stallion when it runs.

اَتنَصُرُ مِنّي مَعشَراً لَستَ مِنهُمُ

اَتنَصُرُ مِنّي مَعشَراً لَستَ مِنهُمُ

وَغَيرُكَ أَولى بِالحِياطَةِ وَالنَصرِ

وَغَيرُكَ أَولى بِالحِياطَةِ وَالنَصرِ

Do you defend against me a people you do not belong to,

Would you triumph through a group whose cause I do not share?

While another has more right to protect and give aid?

Nay, let others tend your life and victory.
