The two hearts throb—nay, the lips yearn.

Since his hands embraced you in longing,

Since the echo of a kiss rang out,

From which his lips drank, then drank again!

And were quenched in spirit, just as—nay, grew thirsty,

With the nectar of longed-for kisses.

Nay, the nectar of immortality—its fruit has grown sweet,

And its sweetness and fragrance coursed through it.

The two hearts throb—nay, the lips yearn.

When his eyes meet your eyes,

When love blazes with aching passion,

The two hearts are seared by the heat of its blaze.

So every mouth hopes for a kiss,

A coolness for the heart's recesses and the lips.

Just as a thirsty one seeks to quench his thirst,

Gazing at water that does not reach his mouth!

The two hearts throb—nay, the lips yearn.

Whenever the guides proclaim glad tidings of love,

Whenever the caller cries, 'Come, come along!'

The deprived one plucks the fruit that has grown sweet.

What of two deprived ones who did not heed

    That voice whose echo resounded?

Go on, come—let us answer the lips' call,

For it is the call of love—or the call of life.
