Whose are these dwellings, like lines of writing?
Desolate ground, effaced by dust-bearing winds and ages.

Rabi'a fears that I might call at her dwelling,
as though I were commanded to pursue her.

My eagle took a single flight, then grew bewildered,
while hawks and falcons guarded her prey.

Why not grow angry on our behalf, when you are emir?

Grant me patronage over them, or grant it to the lowliest of Darim.
Indeed, by my Lord, if you do so, I shall be grateful.

Brand a ring upon their haunches,

They never climb a mountain pass with the noble;
and they have rugged dwellings below that.

Tell Tamim, its lean and its fat alike—
and judgment is sometimes just, sometimes unjust—

am keenly aware of the tilt in their scales.
