لَمdid not أَرI see مِثلَthe like of الخَيلِthe cavalry خَيلِthe cavalry of ابنشson of مِخنَفٍMikhnaf
غَدَاةَon the morning انتَدَىcame forth to meet بِالشَّاكِرىِّagainst al-Shakiri ابنson of كَامِلِKamil
I have never seen cavalry to equal Ibn Mikhnaf's,
on the morning he came forth against al-Shakiri, Ibn Kamil—
أَشَدَّfiercer وَلاَnor أَمضَىmore resolute علىinto الهَولِterror مَقدَماًin advancing
وَأَقتَلَand deadlier لِلقِرنِto the adversary المُشيحِthe battle-ready المُنَازِلِstanding to fight
none fiercer, none more resolute in advancing into terror,
none deadlier to a battle-ready adversary standing to fight.
شَدَدنَاwe charged وَشَدُّواand they charged واضطَرَبنَاand we exchanged blows فَلَمand did not نَخِمwe flinch
وَوَلَّواand they fled سِرَاعاًswiftly كَالنَّعضامِlike ostriches الجوَافِلِfleeing in fright
We charged, and they charged; we traded blows and did not flinch.
And they fled swiftly, like startled ostriches.
فَمَاthen did not لبِثَdelay المُختَارُal-Mukhtar أنto كَرّخَيلَهُhe wheeled his cavalry back
عَلَينَاagainst us فَأَلوَتand it made away بِالكِرَامِwith the noble men الأَمَاثِلِthe foremost
Al-Mukhtar wasted no time in wheeling his cavalry back
against us, and it swept away the noble and eminent.
وَصَكَّتand it struck عَلَينَاagainst us قَومَنَاour people مشنfrom وَرَائِنَاbehind us
فَكَمand how many مِنof قَتِيلٍa slain man بَينَنَاamong us وَمُقَاتِلِand a fighter
And it drove our own men against us from behind:
how many slain men and fighters were among us!
فَماand did not بَرِحَcease القَرمُthe mighty warrior الرِّئيسُthe chief ابنُson of مِخنَفٍMikhnaf
يُقَاتِلُhe fights حَتَّىuntil غَيرَnot مُوَائِلِseeking refuge
Yet the mighty chieftain, Ibn Mikhnaf, never ceased
fighting on, seeking no refuge.
وَنَجَّاهand saved him ضَربُthe blows الأَزدِthe Azd تَزجُرُthey shout حَولَهُaround him
وَتَضرِبُand they strike عَنهُin his defense بِالسُّيُوفِwith swords القَوَاصِلِthe severing
And the blows of the Azd saved him as they shouted around him
and struck in his defense with severing swords.
وَمِنand from دُونِهِbefore him حَامَىfought in defense أَخٌa brother ذُوpossessing حَظفِيظةٍprotective zeal
كَرِيمُnoble النَّثَاreputation وَالخِيمِand character حُلوُsweet الشَّمَائِلِtraits of character
And before him a brother fought in defense, a man of protective zeal,
of noble repute and character, gracious in his ways,
اَغَرُّradiant كَقَرنِlike the rim of الشَّمسِthe sun أَروَعُawe-inspiring مَاجِدٌnoble
نَجيبٌwell-born عَنِfrom الأَعدَاءَthe enemies لَيسَis not بِنَاكِلِone who shrinks back
radiant as the sun's rim, awe-inspiring and noble,
well-born, never flinching from his enemies.
وَضَارِبَand fought حَتّىuntil أَقصَدَتهُstruck him dead رِمَاحُهُمtheir spears
فَبُورِكتَso may you be blessed مِنas a وَرَّادِone who often ventures into مَوتٍdeath حُلاحِلِa mighty chief
And he fought until their spears struck him dead.
So blessed be you, a mighty chief who ventured into death!
سَخَوتَyou gave generously بِنَفسٍwith a life عِندَat ذَاكَthat moment عَزِيزَةٍdear
عَلَينَاto us وَأَجلَىand withdrew كُلُّevery وَانٍlaggard وَخاِذِلِand deserter
You freely gave a life that then was dear
to us, while every laggard and deserter withdrew.
فَيَاso, O عُمَرUmar الخَيرِof goodness الكُرَامَthe noble ones ابنَson of مِخنَفٍMikhnaf
عَلَيكَfor you استَفَاضَتoverflowed عَبرَتِىmy tears غَيرَnot ذَاهِلِforgetful
So, O good Umar, one of the noble, son of Mikhnaf,
for you my tears have overflowed; I do not forget.
I shall weep for you مَالَمas long as not تَنزَحِdrains away العَينُthe eye مَاءَهَاits water
وَمَاand as long as أُثبِتَتare fixed فِىin رَاحَتَىَّmy two palms أَنَامِلِىmy fingers
I shall weep for you as long as the eye has not drained its water,
and as long as my fingers remain fixed in my two palms.
