ألاَhear now أَبلِغtell أَبَاAbu (father of) إسحَاقَIshaq أَنّاthat we
نَزَونَاwe leapt نَزوَةًa rash leap كَانَتwas عَلَينَاagainst us
Hear now: tell Abu Ishaq that we
Convey to Abu Ishaq that we
made a rash leap that turned against us.
Took a stance against them, though hard it be.
خَرَجنَاwe went out لاَnot نَرَىwe consider الضُّعَفَاءَthe weak شَيئاًanything
وَكَانَand was خُرُوجُنَاour going forth بَطَراًarrogance وَحَينَاand doom
We went out, counting the weak as nothing,
We marched not to spare the weak,
and our going forth was arrogance and doom.
Our march was swift and our time picked.
نَرَاهُمwe see them فِىin مَصَفِّهَِمِtheir battle ranks قَلِيلاًfew
وَهُمwhile they مِثلُlike الدَّبَىyoung locusts حِينwhen التقَينَاwe met
We reckoned them few in their battle ranks,
We found them few in their ranks
yet they were like young locusts when we met.
like locusts at first meeting of the flanks.
بَرَزنَاwe came forth إِذwhen رَأَينَاهُمwe saw them فَلمَّاthen when
رَأَينَاwe saw القَومَthe men قَدalready بَرَزُواthey came forth إِلَينَاtoward us
We came forth when we saw them; then, when
We clashed when we saw them looming,
we saw the men had come forth against us,
And when their horde came we saw our dooming.
لَقِينَاwe met with مِنهُمُfrom them ضَرباًblows طِلخفاًfierce
وَطَعناًand thrusts صَائباًwell-aimed حَتَّىuntil انثَنَينَاwe turned back
we met with fierce blows from them
Blows we took from their relentless throngs
and well-aimed thrusts until we turned back.
And stabs that made our ranks ebb long.
نُصِرتَyou were granted victory عَلىover عَدُوِّكَyour enemy كُلَّevery يَومٍday
Husayn
You were granted victory over your enemy every day,
Each day you're made victorious upon your foe’s range,
by every battalion mourning Husayn,
With every brigade mourning Hussein’s change.
كَنَصرlike the victory of مُحَمَّدٍMuhammad فِىon يَومِthe day of بَدرٍBadr
وَيَومِand the day of الشِّعبِthe ravine إِذwhen لاَقَىhe faced حُنَينَاHunayn
like Muhammad's victory on the day of Badr,
As Muhammad was graced at Badr’s fight,
and on the day of the ravine, when he faced Hunayn.
And Hunain’s day when he showed his might.
فَأَسجِحso be lenient إِذnow that مَلَكتَyou gained power فَلَومَلَكنَاfor had we held power
لَجُرنَاwe would surely have acted unjustly فِىin الحُكُومَةِjudgment وَاعتَدَينَاand we would have transgressed
So be lenient now that you hold power; for had we held it,
So revel while you reign but if we held command,
we would have been unjust in judgment and transgressed.
We would wreak havoc as we expand.
تَقَبَّلaccept تَوبَةًrepentance مِنِّىfrom me فَإِنِّىfor I
سَأَشكُرُI shall give thanks إنif جَعَلتَyou make العَفوَpardon دَينَاa debt
Accept repentance from me, for I
Accept my repentance for now I vow
shall give thanks if you make pardon a debt.
To thank you should you mercy allow.
كَذَاكَthus تَرَىyou see سُرَاقَةَSuraqa فَاصطَنِعهُso favor him
فَذَاكَfor that يَزيدُadds مَنof عَادَاتكَyour habits شَينَاa blemish
Thus you see Suraqa; so take him under your patronage,
See Suraqah there, take him in your guard
for that adds a blemish to your ways.
For that increases those who find you hard.
