لَعَمرُكَby your life إنِّيindeed I فِىin الحَيَاةِlife لخَائِفٌindeed afraid
لِبِشرٍof Bishr عَلَىdespite أَنthe fact that لَستُI am not مُتَّرِكاabandoning ذَحلاa blood-feud
By your life, while I live I am indeed afraid
Of Bishr, though I will not abandon a blood-feud.
إذاwhen كَانَis قَلبىmy heart لِلخَلِيفَةِto the caliph نَاصِحاًsincerely loyal
ووجهُand the face الأمِيرِthe prince حينَwhen أَحضُرُهُI attend him سَهلاwelcoming
When my heart is loyal to the caliph,
And the prince's face is welcoming when I come before him,
تَهَضَّمتُI humbled أَعدَائِىmy enemies وجَاشتand seethed مَرَاجِلىmy cauldrons
تَخَالُyou would think القُمَامَthe refuse تَحتَهَاbeneath them حَطَباًfirewood جَزلاَthick and dry
I humble my enemies, and my cauldrons seethe;
You would take the refuse beneath them for thick, dry firewood.
فَإِنso if أَهجُI satirize يَربُوعاًYarbuʿ فَإِنِّىَthen indeed I لاَnot أرَىI see
لِشَيخِهمُfor their elder الأقصَىoldest علىover ناشِىءٍa youth فَضلاَsuperiority
So if I satirize Yarbuʿ, I see no
Superiority in their oldest elder over a youth.
صِغَارٌsmall مَقَارِيهُمtheir guest-bowls عِظَامٌhuge جُعُورُهُمtheir anuses
بِطَاءٌslow إِلَىto الدَّاعِىthe caller إِذاif لَمnot يَكُنit is أكلاَeating
Their guest-bowls are small, their anuses huge;
Slow to answer a summons unless it is to a meal.
قُبَيِّلَةٌa petty little tribe لاَnot يُدرِكُونَthey obtain redress بِتَبلِهِمfor their feud
وَلاَand not يَسبِقُونَthey outpace الدَّهرَever مُطِّلِباًone seeking تَبلاَvengeance
A petty little tribe: they cannot exact their vengeance,
Nor ever outpace a seeker of revenge.
سَوَاءٌall alike كَأَسنَانِlike the teeth of الحِمَارِthe donkey فَلاَso not تَرىyou see
لِذِىfor one with شَيبَةٍgray hair مِنهُمamong them عَلَىover نَاشِىءٍa youth فَضلاَsuperiority
They are alike, like a donkey's teeth; you see no
Superiority in a gray-haired man among them over a youth.
لَعَمرِىby my life لَقَدindeed بَاعَsold الفَرَزدَقُal-Farazdaq نَفسَهُhimself
بِوَكسٍat a loss وَجَارَىand raced لاَnot كَفِيًّاa worthy rival وَلاَand not فَحلاَa stallion
By my life, al-Farazdaq has indeed sold himself
At a loss, and raced—neither a worthy rival nor a stallion.
