Ah, my people, help against the sorrows that visit by night,

And against the calamity arriving through one of hardship's straits,

And the death of two noble lords who were our mainstay,

Among the defenders, the bold attackers, the truehearted.

I heard shrieks that shattered my pillar,

When the first of the setting stars had already sunk,

Of defenders taken captive—oh, what a calamity!

When war laid bare the maidens' anklets,

And of Mirdas's fatal fall upon his noble face,

And his companions beneath the flashing swords.

Two bands—this one, the champion of all Ghamid,

And this one, the pinnacle and highest branch of the house of Bariq.

So I despaired of those whose aid I had hoped for,

When men of noble character were swept away from among us.

And death's herald sounded death's call among us,

And war's millstone turned upon the unbending commanders.

And the women shielded themselves with their hands, as though they were

Lamps in the night, or flashes of lightning.

And we wheeled, and the host wheeled in the heat of battle,

As boys wheel about, playing with cloth whips.

There, no longer does he bring her life-giving rain for her benefit—

Iyas—nor is he looked to for warding off calamities.

O eye, weep for the menders of rifts, men of wisdom,

Poison to their foes—and weep for the guardians of honor.

And weep for Iyas, war's horseman, and mourn

Her bulwark in battle, in every perilous strait.

For the Azd of Iraq and their kin in al-Sham have been bereaved,

And the Azd of Oman, bereft of those tall, crane-like youths.

And our valley became barren, and its people desolate,

And its horsemen were replaced by croaking crows.

For my soul has grown sorrowful at that,

And the partings of my hair have grayed from the burden it laid on me.

So I have no desire for a long life,

And since they departed, I have no love for time.

Would that death's arrows had struck me down,

And my hindrances had held Abu Bakr back with Zahr,

And had not left me amid the recklessness of abject rabble,

Cowards in battle on the morning of the clash,

When testicles flew and he freely gave his life—

Death's brother, beneath the flashing, swinging blades.

And the defender shielded his father, and they distinguished themselves—

By their ancestral merits, the men of lofty houses.

And the sons of the face-veil fled in fear,

And the host's defenders guarded the man with the dried meat.

And though I am bereaved, sorrowful, stricken by loss,

Kept awake by the specter of sorrows that visit by night,

Yet I am not faltering, nor feeble in strength,

Nor so hotheaded that my companion fears harm from me.

Nor do I slap my cousin's face in folly,

Nor do I ever utter a shameful word.
