تمدحُyou praise عمرواAmr وتُريدand you seek رِفداa gift
تمدحُ عمروا وتُريد رِفدا
ياماO you who خضchurn الماءِthe water عَدِمتَyou lack الزُّبْداthe butter
ياما خض الماءِ عَدِمتَ الزُّبْدا
You praise Amr and seek a gift.
O churner of water, you have no butter!
رأيتَyou saw منهof him شارةًfinery وقَدَّاand stature
رأيتَ منه شارةً وقَدَّا
ومِشْوَذاًand a turban مُفوَّفاstriped وبُرداand a cloak
ومِشْوَذاً مُفوَّفا وبُردا
You saw his finery and stature,
And a striped turban and a cloak;
فخلتَso you thought إنساناa human being فكانbut he was قِرداa monkey
فخلتَ إنسانا فكان قِردا
ياAh ربماhow often ظُنَّwas thought السرابُthe mirage وِرداa watering place
يا ربما ظُنَّ السرابُ وِردا
So you thought him human, but he was a monkey.
Ah, how often a mirage has been mistaken for a watering place!
