إذاif كانwas هذاthis الجهلُignorance قدalready شاعَspread فيamong الورىhumankind
فذوthen one possessing العلمknowledge فيماin بينهمtheir midst هوhe جاهلُan ignorant man
If this ignorance has spread among humankind,
Then the learned man among them is an ignoramus.
فإنso if قالhe says مالمwhat ... not يعرفواthey recognize قدرَthe worth of لفظهِits wording
ولاnor قيمةَthe value of المعنَىthe meaning فماthen ... not هوhe قائلُspeaking
If he utters words whose worth they do not grasp,
Nor the value of their meaning, then he has said nothing.
وإنand if هوhe بالصمتin silence استجارَsought refuge لسانُهhis tongue
ففيthen in الصمتِsilence ذوone with نقصٍa deficiency سواءٌequal وفاضلُand an accomplished man
And if his tongue seeks refuge in silence,
Then in silence the deficient and the accomplished are equal.
فليسso there is not لهfor him غيرَother than التجاهلfeigned ignorance ملجأٌa refuge
وأصعبُand the hardest شيءthing عالمٌa learned man متجاهلُfeigning ignorance
So he has no refuge but feigning ignorance;
And hardest of all is a learned man feigning ignorance.
وكنَّاand we had سمعناwe heard فيin الزمانtimes past بباقلٍof Baqil

وهذاand this زمانٌan age كلُّevery one of أهليهِits people باقلُa Baqil
And we had heard, in times past, of Baqil,
And this is an age whose every inhabitant is a Baqil.
