If my description could find its way to my passion,

    Bridled mounts would bear us on the pages' withers;

And I would leave my pens blunted,

And my thoughts drained of every drop,

Out of longing for you, though my fortitude was not struck

By arrows of estrangement or far-flung separation.

No day on which I did not see you has passed

Without a grievous ordeal of sorrow.

Turning again and again toward your home,

I gaze with the eyes of a wasting lover.

Whenever I lift my gaze, love twists my neck,

And whenever I bolt, my infatuation drives me.

And whenever I turn away, only my body

Turns away; my heart does not turn.

Who can grant my limbs their wish,

When hope's promises are destined to fail?

An eye has banished its own pupil

From itself, content with you as its replacement.

And hearing draws its life from a conversation

    Fastened where the earring hangs.

    And my body desires companionship

Like the joining of lām to alif.

These desires of mine—to capture them

Is like hunting the hooked-beaked eagle on mountain peaks.

O dear friend, hear the plea of one

Whom you have burdened with loans and advances.

Do not be excessive in affection, intent on

My enslavement; for miserliness lies in excess.

The sheet has reached me, clothed

In marvels like pearls within their shells.

So your palm seems spring itself, for it never

Leaves the hills without a fresh, ungrazed meadow.

It has laid favors upon my shoulders,

Whose purport is to compel me to bear burdens.

Your favors suffice me: they have united

Your generous gifts to me with honor.
