I raced in love against unbridled steeds, with no end,
I have embarked on love boundless, without end
And here I am, outstripping lovers in anguish.
See me outstripping lovers in endurance

My heart finds no journey in love too long,
My heart cannot endure long journeys of passion
And grief is my provision, and tears among my supplies.
Worry is my provision, my tears my supplies

Fear, O my king, lest your torment of me end,
Gentle, O king, your torment may cease for me
And do not fear that I shall remain without fortitude.
Have no fear I'll remain steadfast without respite

I have an army of patience that is not defeated
An army of patience in me, none can defeat
By longing, whose squadrons raid the liver.
Yearning shifts its encampments upon my liver

I reached the furthest limit in it, and nothing was chipped away
I have reached the furthest extent with no breach
From it by slanderers; it neither diminished nor increased.
Slanderers gnaw but cannot diminish or add

Indeed, those who filled the eyelids with rain
Lovers whose lids brimmed with showers of tears
Are those who filled the mouths with hail.
Lovers whose mouths brimmed with icy shards

He whose canine tooth is cool and sweet, and whose nail is a red ʿanam twig,
He whose mouth shows fangs and claws hook-nailed
Is the gazelle that harms the lion.
Is the deer brought down by the jaws of the lion
نفسيmy soul إلىto اللهGod لاnot تشكوcomplains of جفاءكمُyour coldness
ولاnor إليكمto you فهلso does تشكوcomplain إلىto أحدِanyone
My soul does not complain to God of your coldness,
My soul, complain not of their disdain to God
Nor to you—so does it complain to anyone?
Nor to them - so to whom make your plaint?
