To God I lament the departure on the day of Qarqara,

scattering affections, its branches widely divided.

And a day at al-Bahili's fort that I spent

holding back tears whose streams overflowed.

And a day at Tibrak when I became certain of what

the soul dreaded—and its blaze flared up.

And a day on the plain of al-Akhrabayn, when across our path ran,

with ill omen, al-Akhrabayn's gazelles and its wolf.

And a day at al-Hadiyya's watering-place, when I was told

by my companions, 'Take heart'—but how could I soothe my soul?

And a day at Matlub when I felt a burning heat,

its grip on the heart enduring long [one word unclear].

And a day at al-Muhallaq's water, with its birds,

I tell a lovesick soul what grieves it.

And a day at Qarn—Qarn Nakhla—when there returned

sighs within your soul, whose healer is in Najd.

And a day beside the Sacred House, when it was renewed—

your soul—compelled to face what troubled it.

So, O people of Najd, may you never suffer, and may

your mounts be granted right guidance, and their sins absolved.

Whenever you reach the people of Najd and they are unsaddled—

the young she-camels that carried you, whose toil has lasted long—

then convey to them, from me, a greeting

reserved for my people's young men and gray-haired elders:

a greeting from one longing to see them,

and returning images, whose folk one would ransom.
