خليلان بانا ليس بينهما وتر

And can they meet again [reading uncertain], after once sharing true affection—

Two friends who parted with no grievance between them?

نأت بهما دار الهوى وتراقيا

نأت بهما دار الهوى وتراقيا

ذرى الضغن حتى لج بينهما الهجر

ذرى الضغن حتى لج بينهما الهجر

Love's dwelling carried them far apart, and they climbed

The heights of rancor, until estrangement took stubborn hold between them.

إذا بنت إلا ما عدا النأي بيننا

وبينك لم يلزمك ما فعل الدهر

If you have departed—save for the distance that has come between us
