  1. تواهس أصحابي حديثاً لقيته

    خفياً وأعضاد المطي حوان

    My companions whispered to one another of news I had received,

    In secret, while the riding camels’ forelegs were bent.

  2. كان قذىً بالعين قد مرجت به

    وما حاجةُ الأخرى إلى المرجان

    There was a mote in the eye, which had streamed with tears because of it;

    And what need has the other eye to stream with tears?

  3. بكيت بعينٍ لم تخنها ضمانةٌ

    وأخرى بها ريب من الحدثان

    I wept with an eye that no infirmity had betrayed,

    And another afflicted by the vicissitudes of time.

  4. عذرتك يا عيني الصحيحة بالبكا

    فما أنتِ يا عوراء والهملان

    I excused you, O my sound eye, for weeping;

    But you, O blind eye—what have you to do with streaming tears?
