You are home; anyone else is a journey.

Yours is my heart; for others, only a glance.

O my sweet one, could you be leaving?

And would the stars and the moon depart?

Do flowers tire of their garden?

And would the shells and pearls disappear?

Do the days tear my lilac apart?

And its fragrance—could it fade away?

Have the columns of my caravan departed

from your transparent heart, O Samar?

You have gained from my domes and my minaret

what neither jinn nor humans have gained.

And I invaded your fortified trench—how many

soldiers came to us by night!

    كم حاولوا –حسداً وما قدِروا!

    They did not quench a fire that blazed for us;

how often they tried, out of envy, but could not!

I have become you, and you have become me,

like a lake that the rain has drenched.

And today, then, you intend to part!

And our hearts blaze with longing.

    أهفو إليكِ ودوننا سفرُ

    So you left, until you became my compass;

I yearn for you, and a journey lies between us.

My heart, though they have schemed, calls them liars.

Do you believe today what they have contrived?

If you deny my love out of obstinacy,

or are unaware of it—between us are the pictures!

or leave me—then, oh, my anguish

from a burden-bearer's burden and what she bears!

or flee from me on a journey,

you will not escape me—I am fate!
