لاdo not تمضِgo.. دعناlet us فيin سكونكyour stillness نلتحفْwrap ourselves
O night, wait gently—your appointed end draws near.
O night, slow down; your promise is now at hand.
Do not depart... Let us wrap ourselves in your stillness.
Do not go; let us wrap ourselves in your stillness.
لاdo not تغفُdoze ياO ليلnight الضياءِradiance فإننيfor I
فيin حضنthe embrace of منthe one whom أهوىI love وحيدٌalone أرتجفْI tremble
Do not doze, O night of radiance, for I,
Do not doze, O night of radiance, for I
in the arms of the one I love, am lonely and trembling.
Tremble alone in the arms of the one I love.
أمهِلgrant respite محبّاًa lover قدalready تناءتhas grown distant أرضهُhis land
ودَعand let القلوبthe hearts منfrom الجداولِthe streams ترتشفْsip
Grant respite to a lover whose homeland has grown distant,
Grant respite to a lover whose land has grown distant,
and let the hearts drink from the streams.
And let hearts sip from the streams.

Let us roam the universe together in ecstasy,
Let us roam the universe together in rapture,
and watch the distant star without a destination.
And watch the distant star without a purpose.
ياO ليلُnight ياO وجهاًface ضحوكاًlaughing صارخاًcrying out
ياO تحفةًmasterpiece ليستis not كماlike باقيthe rest of التحفْthe masterpieces
O night, O laughing face that cries aloud,
O night, O laughing face that cries aloud,
O masterpiece unlike all other masterpieces.
O masterpiece unlike other masterpieces.
ياO ليلُnight أحييتyou brought to life الوجودexistence بضحكةٍwith a laugh
وشفيتand you healed عيناًan eye منof دموعٍtears لاdo not تجفْdry
O night, with one laugh you brought existence to life,
O night, you brought existence to life with a laugh,
and healed an eye of tears that never dry.
And healed an eye of tears that never dry.
وسقيتناand you gave us drink حتىuntil رويناwe drank our fill بهجةًjoy
وسعادةًand happiness.. منfrom يائهاits yā (Arabic letter) حتىto الألفْthe alif (Arabic letter)
You gave us drink until we were sated with delight,
And gave us joy to drink until we were sated,
and happiness—from its yāʾ all the way to the alif.
And happiness—from its yā to the alif.

With what, then, can we celebrate, rejoicing at your smi—
So with what shall we celebrate, rejoicing at your smi—
—le, so radiant... when our joy defies description?
—le so radiant, when our joy defies description?
ماwhat ليwith me أرىI see كلall النجومthe stars ترادفتhave lined up in succession
حتىso that علىupon الجوزاءal-Jawza (constellation) إنif شئناwe wish نقفْwe stand
Why do I see all the stars drawn into ranks,
How is it that I see all the stars lined up one after another,
until, if we wished, we might stand upon al-Jawzāʾ?
So that, if we wish, we can stand upon al-Jawza?
ماwhat ليwith me أرىI see الدنياthe world كطفلٍlike a child باسمٍsmiling
ماnot عادany longer يستجديbegs مزيداًmore منof ترفْluxury
Why do I see the world like a smiling child,
How is it that I see the world like a smiling child,
no longer begging for still more luxury?
Who no longer begs for more luxury?
ماwhat ليwith me وللأحزانand with sorrows أحملهاI carry them معيwith me

What have I to do with sorrows, carrying them with me
What have I to do with sorrows, carrying them with me,
like a ship swept away by every wave?
Like a ship swept along with every wave?
أتضمناdo they enfold us? بالليلat night ألفa thousand حكايةٍtales
ويسوقناand drives us on بالصبحat dawn دربٌa road مختلفْdifferent
Does night enfold us with a thousand tales,
Do a thousand tales enfold us at night,
while morning drives us down a different road?
And does a different road drive us on at dawn?

Is it that whenever the armies of our misery perish,
And whenever the legions of our misery perish,
millions of seed-drops rain upon our swelling?
Do millions of droplets rain down in our season?
ياO ليلُnight.. ماwhat نفعُbenefit اللقاءِthe meeting.. وحزنناand our sorrow

O night... what use is meeting, when our sorrow
O night, what good is meeting, when our sorrow
is like funeral wakes stretching from Karbala to Najaf?
Is like mourning gatherings from Karbala to Najaf?
ياO حزنُsorrow أمهلناgrant us respite فإنfor indeed قلوبَناour hearts

O sorrow, grant us respite, for our hearts
O sorrow, grant us respite, for our hearts
are weary... and the night, O sorrow, has reached its midpoint.
Have grown weary, and the night, O sorrow, is half spent.

We play like children and do not know that
death is racing ahead of us... alas!
Death races ahead of us—alas!
