ياO زائريmy visitor فيin المساthe evening قدindeed قلتَyou said ذاتone مساevening
لاno لنwill not تضيعbe lost حكاياناour tales معwith الغلسِthe predawn gloom
O my visitor in the evening, you said one evening:
O my visitor in the evening, you once said one evening
No, our tales will not be lost with the predawn gloom.
That our tales will not be lost with the setting sun
وقلتand you said ليto me أنthat ليfor me بالصدرin the breast صومعةًa hermitage
ماnot كفَّceased رهبانهاits monks قرعاًstriking علىupon النُقُسِthe bells
And you told me that in my breast there was a hermitage,
And you told me that in my heart there is a monastery
Whose monks never ceased striking the bells.
Whose monks never stopped knocking on the bells
وأنand that ليfor me فيin ثناياthe folds of الروحthe soul أغنيةًa song
لاnot تنتهيends أبداًever إلاexcept معwith النفَسِthe breath
And that in the folds of my soul there was a song,
And that I have within the folds of my soul a song
That never ends until the breath does.
That never ends except with my final breath
حتىuntil إذاwhen خلتنيyou thought me فيin النورthe light مروحةًa fan
أطويI fold الغمامthe clouds ولاand not أخشىI fear منof العسسِthe night watchmen
Until, when you thought me a fan in the light,
Until when you left me a fan in the light
Folding the clouds and fearing no night watchmen,
I fold up the clouds and fear no oppression
رميتyou hurled رمحكyour spear فيin غدرٍtreachery فأسقطنيso it felled me
ورُحتand you began تضحكyou laugh منat حُمقيmy folly ومنand at هوسيmy obsession
You hurled your spear in treachery, and it felled me.
You threw your spear in betrayal and struck me down
And you began laughing at my folly and my obsession.
And went about laughing at my stupidity and passion
تركتنيyou left me فيin دجىthe darkness of الأيامthe days هامدةًlifeless
كجثةٍlike a corpse طويتwas folded away فيin سرمدthe eternity of الدمسِdarkness
You left me lifeless in the darkness of the days,
You left me in the gloom of days, lifeless,
Like a corpse folded away in eternal darkness.
Like a corpse folded in the eternity of obscurity
تركتنيyou left me أحتسيI sip حزنيmy sorrow كمئذنةٍlike a minaret
جوفاءhollow قدhad تُركتbeen abandoned يوماًone day بأندلسِin al-Andalus
You left me sipping my sorrow, like a minaret
You left me sipping my sorrow like a minaret
Hollow, abandoned one day in al-Andalus.
Hollow, once left behind in Andalusia
ياO زائريmy visitor فيin المساthe evening، صمتيmy silence سيقتلنيwill kill me

O my evening visitor, my silence will kill me.
O my visitor in the evening, my silence will kill me
Do I complain of love, or do I complain of muteness?
Should I complain of love or complain of muteness?
ياO زائريmy visitor إننيindeed I أذويI wither، ويفضحنيand exposes me
منamong سائرall الناسpeople دمعٌtears غيرnot منحبسِheld back
O my visitor, I wither, and I am exposed
O my visitor, I am melting away, and I am exposed
Among all people by tears that cannot be held back.
By a tear to all people that cannot be contained
لمنfor whom أخبئُI hide هذاthis الحُسنbeauty ياO وجعيmy pain
ومنand who سيقطفwill pluck منfrom طُهريmy purity ومنand from دَنسيmy impurity
For whom do I hide this beauty, O my pain?
To whom can I hide this beauty, O my agony,
And who will pluck from my purity and from my impurity?
And who will pluck from my purity and my blemish?
لمنfor whom ثنايايmy folds، أنفاسيmy breaths، ومدفأتيand my hearth
ومنand who سيهويwill bring down بماءwith the water of الخُلدimmortality فيinto قبسيmy flame
For whom are my folds, my breaths, and my hearth?
For whom are my folds, my breaths and my hearth,
And who will cast the water of immortality into my flame?
And who will plunge into the water of eternity in my niche?

Will you really leave my heart like an ashtray?
Will you really leave my heart like a shaken rug?
And my world clothed in the dust of those who have gone?
And shroud my world in the dust of the departed?
حقاًreally ستتركنيyou will leave me للموتto death يخطفنيit snatches me away؟

Will you really leave me for death to snatch away?
Will you really leave me for death to snatch me away
And you are not turning back, despite my calls?
And not come running despite my cries?

Am I really a pitch-black spot?
Am I really a black stain, muddy?
Have I stained your white page with filth?
Did I stain your white page with filth?

ياO ليتنيif only I قدhad أحطتُI surrounded القلبَthe heart بالحرسِwith guards
Alas for me! If only I had not been his doll.
Woe is me! Would that I had not been his doll
Oh, if only I had surrounded my heart with guards!
Would that I had guarded my heart with caution
لوif أننيthat I كنتُI had been للأقدارof the fates عارفةًaware

Had I known the fates,
If only I had known what fate held in store
I would not have sailed through waves of dryness!
I would not have sailed on a wave of aridity
لوif أننيthat I لمhad not أدعI let قلبيmy heart يضيّعنيit leads me astray

Had I not let my heart lead me astray,
If only I had not let my heart lead me astray
The knight of dreams would not have become my predator.
The knight of dreams would not have been my predator

O visitor to the dream, leave my heart and go onward,
O dream visitor, leave my heart be and walk away
And I will not reveal what you left on the horse.
And I will not reveal what you left in Persia
