Within it are windings like snakes that coil
It has winding alleys like creeping snakes
their bodies as they crawl, disappearing into the soil.
That hide their bodies in the ground as they crawl

Carriages collide as they move along,
Carts collide as they pass through
and the thin man jostles with a donkey.
And the slender man jostles with a donkey

Many an unharmed man returned wounded, and many
How many unharmed men have returned wounded, and how many
a child died underfoot, while another sank from sight.
Children were trampled to death, while others escaped

A drain carried him down into a pit
He was brought down into a pit
filled with water whose stench had risen.
Filled with rotten water that had fermented

The walker rises and descends as he goes,
The pedestrian ascends and descends in his walk
and all is rugged, wrenching out the nails.
And everywhere is a rugged road that tears off nails
فلأَنso if (likely intended) ركبتَyou ride وانand if مشيتyou walk لميّضةٌsurely a calamity (uncertain reading)

So whether you ride or walk, it is surely [a calamity]—
Whether you rode or walked briskly
a dark one, bringing sorrow and disgrace.
It is a gloomy, sorrowful journey that brings misery and hardship

نازلٌdwelling والكربand anguish حلَّarrived وزاراand visited
Good has departed from it, and evil within it
Goodness has departed from it while evil resides in it
dwells; anguish has arrived and paid a visit.
Distress has descended and settled down

There is no merit in it, save that its lodger
It has no merit other than its inhabitants
fears death and so shuns sins.
Fearing depravity and avoiding burdens

It harbors dogs by the many thousands,
It contains countless mangy dogs
scrawny and puny, barking at visitors.
That bark at visitors and strangers

At times they tangle together in fights, and at times
Sometimes scuffling with broken pots
they run and so unseat the dauntless horseman.
Sometimes chasing away frightened horsemen

Ticks infest their bodies, so their skins
Lice have filled their bodies, so their skin
are mangy; they rub against a wall for relief.
Itches as they scratch themselves on the walls

Then would life not be reckoned a grievous calamity
Does not living there seem a tremendous misery
by a man whom dogs assail again and again?
When dogs gnaw at a man and he is helpless?

So understand, and compare that with this,
So reflect on the difference between this and that
and shed your streaming tears in sorrow.
And shed plentiful tears in sorrow
