قالوا لقد بعث الدُخانَ لعلَّةٍ

قالوا لقد بعث الدُخانَ لعلَّةٍ

مصباحنا الجالي سناهُ الحندسا

مصباحنا الجالي سناهُ الحندسا

They said, 'Indeed, it has given off smoke because of an ailment—

They said, "Indeed, smoke arises for some cause—

our lamp, whose radiance dispels the deep darkness.'

Our bright lamp, the engineer did design it."

فأجبتهم قد ضاق عن حمل الاسى

فأجبتهم قد ضاق عن حمل الاسى

ذَرعاً لفرط دلالكم فتنفَّسا

ذَرعاً لفرط دلالكم فتنفَّسا

So I answered them, 'It could no longer bear sorrow,

I replied, "It wearies from bearing your sorrow—

overwhelmed by your excessive coyness, and so it sighed.'

For your excessive petting, it sighs and it breathes."
