    The time of parting has come; O companions, pause

    To bid farewell to the verse of one enamored of poetry.

    For verse has failed me in your absence; yet faithful remains

    A tear that lavishes prose upon me.

    Were it not for the hope of our fellowship’s return,

    I would have become mute until the end of time.

    أفليس مصرٌ مهبط السِحرٍِ

    It is no wonder that poetry has excelled here;

    Is Egypt not, then, the place where magic descends?
