عنfrom بليدٍa dullard ماas long as اجنَّshrouded in darkness الغاسقُthe dark night
عن بليدٍ ما اجنَّ الغاسقُ
A sweet spring that wisdom has guarded
Let detractors say what they will about me
from a dullard, as long as night spreads its darkness.
I live on, lover, as long as lovers live
يزدريهِscorns it سافلُbase in الطبعnature غبيٌّa fool
يزدريهِ سافلُ الطبع غبيٌّ
ويُعليهand exalts it همامٌa valiant man حاذِقُdiscerning
ويُعليه همامٌ حاذِقُ
A base-natured fool scorns it,
and a valiant, discerning man exalts it.
فليقُلso let him say ماwhatever شاءَhe wishes عنيabout me قائلٌa speaker
فليقُل ما شاءَ عني قائلٌ
عاشِقٌa lover مادمتُas long as I remain احييI live عاشقُa lover
عاشِقٌ مادمتُ احيي عاشقُ
So let anyone say what he wishes about me:
A lover—as long as I live, a lover.
