فعلىso upon التقاديرfate’s decrees السلامpeace فكمfor how often بهاthrough them
فعلى التقادير السلام فكم بها
وجدfound الغشومُthe tyrant لبغيهِfor his oppression عذاراan excuse
وجد الغشومُ لبغيهِ عذارا
So peace be upon fate’s decrees—for how often through them
The tyrant has found an excuse for his oppression!
وعلىand upon التقاديرfate’s decrees السلامpeace فكمfor how many لهاthey have
وعلى التقادير السلام فكم لها
فيin الشرقthe East منof أثرٍan effect يضيّعlets go to waste ثاراvengeance
في الشرق من أثرٍ يضيّع ثارا
And peace be upon fate’s decrees—for many are their
Effects in the East that leave vengeance unfulfilled!
وعلىand upon التقاديرfate’s decrees السلامpeace فكمfor how often بهاthrough them
وعلى التقادير السلام فكم بها
تخذَtook الخَمولُthe indolent man لذاتهِfor himself أنصاراsupporters
تخذَ الخَمولُ لذاتهِ أنصارا
And peace be upon fate’s decrees—for how often through them
The indolent man has enlisted supporters for himself!
وعلىand upon التقاديرfate’s decrees السلامpeace فقدfor indeed غدَتthey have become
وعلى التقادير السلام فقد غدَت
ترساًa shield بقيremained (likely يقي, ‘protects’) الأشرارthe wicked والأغراراand the naïve
ترساً بقي الأشرار والأغرارا
And peace be upon fate’s decrees—for they have become
A shield [protecting] the wicked and the naïve.
