أيا مصر كم فيكِ من جاهلٍ

تفرنجَ حتى بخطواتهِ

O Egypt, how many an ignorant man within you

O Egypt, how many an ignorant one

has become Westernized, even in his footsteps!

Has become Westernized even in his steps

لقد أنكر الشرقَ وهو ابنهُ

لقد أنكر الشرقَ وهو ابنهُ

وبالغرب هام وآفاتهِ

وبالغرب هام وآفاتهِ

He has indeed disowned the East, though he is its son,

He has denied the East though it's his origin

and become enamored of the West and its ills.

And craved the West and its afflictions

تعوَّد قدحاً على جنسهِ

تعوَّد قدحاً على جنسهِ

كذا المرءُ عبدٌ لعاداتهِ

كذا المرءُ عبدٌ لعاداتهِ

He has made a habit of disparaging his own race;

He got used to lampooning his own people

thus man is a slave to his habits.

Thus is one enslaved by his habits

فتسعى يداهُ إلى بؤسهِ

فتسعى يداهُ إلى بؤسهِ

ويطلب عزّاً بزلاتهِ

ويطلب عزّاً بزلاتهِ

So his hands strive toward his misery,

His hands strive towards his misery

and he seeks glory through his missteps.

And he seeks pride through his errors

ويهدم باللؤم ما قد بنى ال

ويهدم باللؤم ما قد بنى ال

أوائلُ حبَّا بمرضاتهِ

أوائلُ حبَّا بمرضاتهِ

And basely he demolishes what was built by the

And destroys with vileness what the ancestors

forebears, out of love, to please him.

Had built with love and their pleasures

أضاع الوفاءَ وباع الحيا

أضاع الوفاءَ وباع الحيا

وللغرب أبدى حماقاتهِ

وللغرب أبدى حماقاتهِ

He squandered loyalty and sold his modesty,

He lost loyalty and sold dignity

and displayed his follies to the West.

And to the West displayed his follies

وأبدى الرطانةَ مستعجماً

وأبدى الرطانةَ مستعجماً

ليضحك رهط سفاهاتهِ

ليضحك رهط سفاهاتهِ

And he paraded foreign jargon, playing the foreigner,

And exhibited vulgarity, pretending to be civilized

to make his foolish company laugh.

To make his gang of fools laugh

وأغرى بقتل أَبيهِ الأُسا

وأغرى بقتل أَبيهِ الأُسا

ةَ ليمرحَ لهواً بحاناتهِ

ةَ ليمرحَ لهواً بحاناتهِ

And he incited the healers to kill his father,

And was tempted to kill his noble fathers

so he might revel idly in his taverns.

To frolic fancifully in their haunts

رحيقٌ صُراحٌ وجوهٌ صِبا

رحيقٌ صُراحٌ وجوهٌ صِبا

حٌ وعرضٌ مباحٌ للذَّاتهِ

حٌ وعرضٌ مباحٌ للذَّاتهِ

Pure, unmixed wine; beautiful faces;

Wine is sparkling, faces are rosy, bodies are luscious

and honor made fair game for his pleasures.

And chastity is allowed for his pleasure

أمن ذاك تعجبُ وهو الذي

أمن ذاك تعجبُ وهو الذي

يعيب على الله آياتهِ

يعيب على الله آياتهِ

Do you marvel at that, when he is the one

Is this not odd that he who

who finds fault with God for His signs?

Criticizes God and His signs?

غدا يحسب الكفر شرطا لمن

غدا يحسب الكفر شرطا لمن

اضاف الترقَي الى ذاتهِ

اضاف الترقَي الى ذاتهِ

He has come to deem unbelief a prerequisite for anyone

Tomorrow he will think blasphemy a condition

who claims progress for himself.

For anyone who adds progress to his essence

فيا نفس صبراً على ما مني

فيا نفس صبراً على ما مني

بهِ الشرق مِن جَورِ أسراتهِ

بهِ الشرق مِن جَورِ أسراتهِ

So, O soul, be patient with what has befallen

So O soul, be patient with what

the East through the tyranny of its families.

The East is afflicted with from its elite

لقد عَقَّهُ اليومَ حتى بنوهُ

لقد عَقَّهُ اليومَ حتى بنوهُ

فخلوهُ طعمة جاراتهِ

فخلوهُ طعمة جاراتهِ

Indeed, even its sons have betrayed it today;

For today even its children have stung it

so they left it prey for its neighbors.

Leaving it prey for its neighbors

نفوسٌ كبارٌ عقولٌ صغارٌ

نفوسٌ كبارٌ عقولٌ صغارٌ

وكونٌ يُحار بحالاتهِ

وكونٌ يُحار بحالاتهِ

Great souls, small minds,

Great souls, little minds

and a universe bewildered by its circumstances.

And a universe that confuses with its states
