If you are sincere in love, O my enchantress,

then accept for yourself what I accept.

You pledged yourself to me, then broke your pledge four times.

Woe to the heart, for the beloved and his lies!

Is this how a noble lover's heart is treated,

after tasting every kind of torment through its love?

My patience is lost; my fortitude has failed me. Enough

of mocking a lovesick man whose heart you rule.

He gave you all his being and his life,

yet in love you made that your arsenal against him.

you make him promises, but only to beguile him.

love of fickleness is rooted in its heart.

How bewildering: an angel of beauty, whose heart—

[unclear epithet]—is like solid rock in its hardness.

is content, hoping for salvation through his crucifixion.

Likewise, he would swallow deadly poison

instead of pure water, whenever you ordered him to drink it.

For that is better than his losing his reason

and spending the night disgraced by the dregs of his anguish.

May God afflict your heart, O cruel one—

that hard heart—with a disease beyond all cure:

with stinging, burning love for one

who, like you, is cruel to a lover.

Then your heart would know how much a lover suffers,

when injustice always stands in his path.

I have nothing left but prayers against you, O

monarch who unjustly doomed your beloved to misery,

to his wasting away, to his withering, to his bewilderment.

So let him, henceforth, find his Lord's mercy.

    يا ربِّ عذبهُ ولا ترفق بهِ

    My tormentor repaid my tenderness with deceit;

O Lord, torment him, and do not be gentle with him.

he who wrote this in his books spoke the truth.

Would that Adam had died in his paradise,

before the deceit of her who lived beside him.

my hope, and of this age and its companions.

And I shall surely sever my ties with the beloved,

and live a hermit's life in his retreat.

    Despair—utter despair—of all humankind:

for through it the wise man finds peace of mind.
