    If this heart of yours is hewn from stone,

    yet water flows from stone—I swear by love.

    Or if it is of metal, passion, O my hope,

    is fire—and can metal withstand the sparks?

    So, O Rabab, for love of whom my infatuation

    has left nothing of my heart's blood and spared nothing,

    مني ارفقي بفتى أضحى على خطر

    come, have mercy on me, take pity—even show me generous kindness;

    grant me your favor; be gentle with a youth now in peril:

    مضنى كئيب شجي دائم الفكر

    lovesick, infatuated, yearning, love-bewildered, ailing,

    worn out, sorrowful, grief-stricken, ever pensive;

    خليل غم خليل البؤس والكدر

    an offspring of worry, a brother of sleeplessness, a father of sickness;

    an intimate of grief, an intimate of misery and gloom.

    The gray doves lamented him in their spreading trees before dawn,

    when they saw his tears like dew in the predawn hour.

    He keeps vigil through the nights, a dead man now being revived

    by passion's enfolding, and so spends his life in sleeplessness.

    He has melted with passion, faded from rejection, died of sorrow,

    until he became a specter in the ugliest of forms.

    I wished, by God, that I had never been human,

    for the horror of what has befallen me, O fairest of humankind.

    And often it seemed to me that death, for one

    who has become like me, is a gift of victory and triumph.

    Separation clothed me in robes from its bounty,

    but of illness, not of fine green silk.

    And my anguish from longing clothed me—alas, my misery!—

    in a crown of gray hair, not of gleaming gold.

    Never did the paradise of those cheeks appear in my thoughts

    without my heart finding itself in Saqar.

    So the heart burns, and the eyelid drowns,

    and the eye is sleepless, and the soul in straits.

    عز انتظاري قضى جهدي انقضى عمري

    My patience was lost, my reason departed, my fortitude weakened;

    my waiting grew unbearable, my strength failed, my life ran out.

    Two things—one of them must come, and swiftly:

    either death or the fulfillment of desire.
