If they told Homer in his crypt
If they told Homer in his slumber
Of your wondrous work, he would regain his life,
Of your wondrous making, he would regain his life

And spring up to praise an aspiration that ascended to
And a flame would fly, ambition soaring
The sphere of glory since you rendered his verses into Arabic.
To the highest sphere, once you had Arabized his verses.

He had never imagined that the moons of darkness
He wouldn't have thought that the moons of nighttime
Had descended to bestow their light on his lamp-niche.
Had descended to lend their light to his concerns,

If it weren't for Solomon broadcasting pride
With which he revived his remains beneath the earth,
With which he revived beneath the soil his remains.

The age and its people would have remained ignorant—especially
The age and its people were ignorant, especially
We Arabs—of his poetry and its subtleties.
We Arabs, of his poetry and wit.

Be as Time wills; for you, in
Be however you wish, O age, for you are
The age of eloquence, adorn its mirror.
In the era of rhetoric adorning its mirror.

And whenever poetry falls ill, you are indeed its physician,
You wouldn't be what poetry's art was lacking
And its cure—nay, the raiser of its dead.
Its doctor, no, but reviver of its dead.

And when a pulpit sings with eloquence,
And if a pulpit were to chant eloquently
You are the one who carries its voices to the multitude.
You'd be the messenger to the scholars of its voices.
لمnot القَI have met قبلكَbefore you باذلاًone giving دينارَهُhis dinar

Before you, I never met one who gave his dinar
Why was money wasted before you
And his life, and lavished his hours,
And lives and hours squandered?

Freely, without pay, to bestow on a nation
Pardon, without pay, just to make a nation love
Services that grant its glory what it had lacked.
The servants who enabled its lost glory.

Had they been just, they would have carved their livers for him
If they were fair they'd carve their livers
Into a statue showing Time its guides.
Into an idol representing his guidance for the age.

You cleared its clouds from the horizon of speech,
You've dispelled from language's horizon its clouds
And held its tyrants back from the throne of verse;
And reined in usurpers to rhetoric's throne,

And guarded its domain and preserved its honor,
And protected its precincts and guarded its treasures,
And drove its seducers from eloquence's secluded chamber.
And warded debauchery off the mind of rhetoric.

Your age, itself a keen, cutting sword, had never found
Your times didn't meet while sternly angry
As it cleaved hopes, anyone who could blunt its edge,
Tearing hopes from whoever's youth slipped away,

Until the signs of your excellence appeared as arrows
Until your excellences' signs appeared like arrows
That went on to scatter its armored warriors like a flock.
That went and scattered the flock of desires.

You made praise dear to me, though I used to shun it,
You made me love praise though I'd shunned it
Until, by praising your own self, I loved praise itself.
Until I loved praising your essence for its essence.

So rejoice in it: praise that rose above its peers,
With it I congratulate praise that elevated
So long as you remain a huntsman catching its falcons.
Its dust, for as long as you keep hunting its beasts.

Not everyone who enters the lair is a lion
Not every snarler entering the lair is a lion.
Entitled to take its oryxes as prey.
It's right for him to violate its sanctums!

For a youth hoards pearls, jealously guarding them,
So the pearl a lad hoards stingily
Until testing shows him those worthy of them.
Until trial reveals his capacities.

Likewise, praise is guarded in its towers,
And so praise is guarded in its towers
Until the praisers meet its nobles.
Until the praising meet its ballrooms.

So when it took bodily form for me, and you were its mainstay,
And if you embodied yourself for me and were its pillar
I clothed it in robes that vex its enemies,
I'd dress it in gowns provoking its foes.

And made my verse, upon the features of its face,
And I'd make my poetry kissing its features
Kisses that stud its uvula with stars.
A string of stars adorning its cheeks.
