At your largesse, Hatim has begun, there in his grave,

to groan with envy, with no consolation.

Among the masters of noble deeds, you alone are peerless—

a man to whose surpassing generosity even enemies testify.

They likened you to a sea of surging water,

but in that comparison they erred.

For the sea is salt and cannot be borne, while your bounty—

overflowing—is sweet water, with healing in it besides.

The sea, covetous, withholds whatever it has,

whereas your wealth is freely bestowed, enriching others.

You are no sea forever gathering up a hoard,

but a valley from which the water has flowed forth.
