ربmany a سِرsecret كتمتهُI concealed it فَكَأَنّيso it is as though I
رب سِر كتمتهُ فَكَأَنّي
اِخرسmute اِوor ثَنىrestrained لِسانيmy tongue عَقلreason
اِخرس اِو ثَنى لِساني عَقل
Many a secret have I concealed, as though I were
Many a secret have I concealed, so it is as though I were
mute, or reason had held my tongue in check.
mute, or reason had restrained my tongue.
وَلَوand if أَنّيthat I اِظهَرتُI revealed لِلنّاسِto the people دينيmy religion
وَلَو أَنّي اِظهَرتُ لِلنّاسِ ديني
لَمnot يَكُنbe ليfor me فيin غَيرِother than حَبسيmy confinement أَكلfood
لَم يَكُن لي في غَيرِ حَبسي أَكل
And had I revealed my faith to the people,
And if I revealed my religion to the people,
I would have no food except in my prison.
I would have nothing to eat outside my prison.
