اِذا كُنت لا تَرجى بِدَفع ملمة

اِذا كُنت لا تَرجى بِدَفع ملمة

وَلم يَكُ لِلمَعروفِ عِندَكَ موضِع

وَلم يَكُ لِلمَعروفِ عِندَكَ موضِع

If you are not relied upon to ward off a calamity,

If you do not hope to repel an affliction,

And there is no place for kindness with you,

And kindness has no place with you,

وَلا اِنتَ ذو جاه يعاش بِجاهِهِ

وَلا اِنتَ ذو جاه يعاش بِجاهِهِ

وَلا اِنتَ يَوم البَعث لِلنّاسِ تشفع

وَلا اِنتَ يَوم البَعث لِلنّاسِ تشفع

Nor are you a person of influence whose influence sustains others,

Nor do you have status by which you live,

Nor do you intercede for people on the Day of Resurrection,

Nor will you intercede for people on the Day of Resurrection,

فَعيشك في الدُنيا وَمَوتك واحِد

فَعيشك في الدُنيا وَمَوتك واحِد

وَعود خلال من حَياتِكَ اِنفَع

وَعود خلال من حَياتِكَ اِنفَع

Then your life in this world and your death are the same,

Then your life and death in this world are one,

And a toothpick is more useful than your life.

And the most beneficial thing in your life is to return.
