    What grants homelands their worth?

Is it fervent words about homelands?

Or an anthem filling the world with clamor,

That has wearied ears with glorification and thanks?

No, by my Lord—only a generous love

That embraced the soil in reverence and purity,

Then prayed, having rubbed his face in dust,

With a mouth that mingled gold with invocations.

He embraces the earth—was she ever anything but a mother?

He comes from her and returns to her, toward another [life].

Ah, man in his excess, when

He exalts himself, spreading arrogance and insolence,

He wounds the earth and goes on in conceit,

Leaving a memory on the page of chronicles!

What a memory of ingratitude and swagger,

That challenged his pride in noble glory!

The homelands indeed—there is no shade but theirs,

When shade is sought as shelter for the honorable.

And through them a proud soul rises to honor,

He is more deserving of eminence and esteem,

Content, he delights in life's tender shoot,

Leaping free as a bird among the boughs.

These homelands, on the horizon of their grandeur,

Are a star that shone with love and grew rich.

They stored their love in secrecy's pouch,

So we made their love flow as a river across the earth.

And we wrote love's decree upon ourselves,

On passion's pages, in poetry and prose.

No traitor has changed our love for them,

Though he ravaged their garden, secretly and openly.

    هكذا عهدُ الوفا للحرِّ أَمْرا

    We have lived there only in fidelity to love;

Such is loyalty's covenant—a command for the free.
